February 19th marked the date of the 2015 NBA trade deadline. As always, teams wait until the last hour or so to make their decisions creating an hour of pandemonium in which most call ‘the trade frenzy’. Some big time players will be finding new places to live in different cities and some teams are that much closer to making a championship run. Here are the biggest trades that went through.
Brooklyn Nets power forward Kevin Garnett traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Kevin Garnett is high up on the list of best ever NBA big men. He started off his career in Minnesota in 1995 when he was drafted fifth overall straight out of high school. In 2007 he was sent to the Boston Celtics in a trade. He played there for six seasons and helped them win a championship in 2008 over the LA Lakers. In 2013 He left the Celtics to Join the Brooklyn Nets. Now he is returning to the place he started his professional career and will almost certainly retire as a T-Wolf.
In return for Garnett, who can still hang with the best players in the NBA even with his aging body, the Timberwolves sent Thaddeus Young to the Nets. This was a questionable move on behalf of Minnesota. Garnett is an expensive player and doesn’t have much time left in his career to contribute to their program. A team that is 11-42 should be going after young talent. However, Garnett has a list of accomplishments that will make your jaw drop and can provide leadership and wisdom to this young team, especially Andrew Wiggins.
Phoenix Suns point guard Goran Dragic to the Miami Heat.
Dragic was destined to leave the Suns because he had poor relationships with the executives on the team. There were many teams bidding on Dragic but the Miami Heat was able to lock him up. This came as a shock to many people because GM Pat Riley has made it clear he wants to save cap space for the 2016 free agency to land a big name player. The Heat planned on having former Uconn Huskie and first round pick, Shabazz Napier, to hold down the PG position this year. Now Napier is in the D-League because of poor performance and the Heat want a new guard that can fill that role. Dragic is one of the best shooters in the NBA. His field goal percentage is the second highest in the league (50.1%) behind Kyle Korver (51.2%). In return, the Suns get two first round picks and Danny Granger. This was a smart move for the Suns because now they have opportunity for two young impact players and an experienced Danny Granger.
Phoenix Suns point guard/shooting guard Isaiah Thomas traded to the Boston Celtics.
The Boston Celtics have traded away just about their entire original roster in exchange for draft picks. Their star point guard Rajon Rondo was traded to the Dallas Mavericks earlier this season and ever since there has been a gaping hole at the point guard position. Isaiah Thomas will not be able to take over the role that Rondo had. However, he will be able to hold down the fort until the Celtics can get a star point guard in a future draft. This season is a loss, but maybe Thomas can be a part of the rebuilding of this organization.
